The innovation of this product is its ability to provide reliable protection for machines that may operate at subsynchronous frequencies. Therefore, there is no need to disable protection during generator startup.
“SEL-2664S is the only stator ground protection relay that injects up to four individual frequencies to ensure there is no blind spot in protection during generator startup,” said Dave Whitehead, SEL vice president of R&D.
In addition to providing reliable protection for high-impedance grounded generators, the SEL-2664S also features a powerful communications package, including Modbus®, DNP3, IEC 61850, and Mirrored Bits® communications. With four trip-rated output contacts and two input contacts, the SEL-2664S can be used as a standalone protection unit and does not rely on an external device to detect and trip for stator ground faults. The SEL-2664S can be easily integrated into existing generator protection schemes.
Large generators are critical power system resources capable of influencing the stability of an entire geographic region. Given the fault energies involved, the potential asset destruction, and the costs associated with generator repair, generator protection is seen as a key component for ensuring reliable power system operation.
